Frequently Asked Questions

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically the CD4 cells, weakening a person’s ability to fight infections. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is the final stage of HIV infection when the immune system is severely damaged.

HIV can be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles or syringes, from mother to child during childbirth or breastfeeding, and less commonly through blood transfusions or organ transplants.

Prevention measures include practicing safe sex, using condoms consistently and correctly, getting tested and knowing your partner’s HIV status, using clean needles and syringes, and taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if at high risk.

Early symptoms can include fever, fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches. In the later stages, symptoms can manifest as persistent fever, night sweats, weight loss, chronic diarrhea, and opportunistic infections.

Yes, HIV can be managed with antiretroviral therapy (ART). ART helps lower the viral load, maintain a healthy immune system, and reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to others.

Currently, there is no cure for HIV/AIDS. However, with early detection, proper medical care, and adherence to ART, people with HIV can live long and healthy lives.
